The city of Champlin is located along the Mississsippi River, surrounded by the cities of Anoka, Dayton, Brooklyn Park, Maple Grove and Coon Rapids, about 17 miles northwest of Minneapolis. According to the Census Bureau, Champlin has a total area of 8.8 square miles , of which, 8.2 square miles of it is land and 0.6 square miles of it (7.05%) is water. The average elevation is 875 feet above sea level and the Mississippi River is approximately one-eighth of a mile wide throughout Champlin.

In 1955, Edina, Minnesota housewife and mother of three Emma Rovick borrowed $2,000 and bought a struggling real estate firm in order to make enough money to buy a piano for her daughter.
